Leaving a piece of one’s heart

A former neighbor this morning wrote to reassure me that I can handle the upcoming transition to Houston–and she said that there are always bumps in a move, but they won’t be felt so much if we take them in low gear! I love that thought. It strikes me that there are things we know well in our head that have yet to filter to our hearts…
creating space for the filtering is important–as is giving ourselves time. Even so, I realize I leave a piece of my heart in Austin after 20 years…

If you are going through a transition or are stuck in a place, seek out a life coach who can shine a light on your path!

What will keep you young, vibrant and healthy?

All around us there is a lot of talk about passion–what magical quality does passion have? Will it be enough to keep us young, vibrant and healthy? I am often puzzled–what is passion anyway? One of the definitions of passion at dictionary.com is “a strong or extravagant fondness, enthusiasm, or desire for anything: a passion for…” What gives you energy? What are you enthusiastic about? Are you afraid of giving in to your heart’s desire or are you ready to pursue it? Live in the present, be energized by your passion and do not let fear take hold!
If you are interested in exploring the possibilities, working with a coach might be a good way to discover what your passions are, to become aware of how fear is playing in your life, and to design a course of action that puts you on the path to live a full life! Discover your passion and, I have no doubt, you will be young, vibrant and healthy longer!

By the way, I am reading a good book that is making me think about this subject. You might want to pick up Beaudine’s You’ve Got Who or read it on the kindle!

Social media for business…the old and the young

Thanks to Jill (see her cool blog at mysolis.com )or pointing out in a comment to my previous thoughts that the stuff of web 2.0 can be great for business. I completely agree with her! There are new opportunities for people to use Facebook, Twitter and the like to provide useful information–and, no, what you had for lunch does not really qualify…but maybe a cool new lunch place would! Yet, I still see people, especially older ones, that resist the technology change.
I wonder, moreover, if the arrival of “wiser” folks on Facebook will make the younger ones migrate to other “hiding places”! The recent story of the person who twittered about her new job offer at Cisco (as published recently in a NYT story) and presumably lost it before she even started is currently making the rounds on the internet….and is a reminder that the young users could teach the old folks how to use twitter, and the older folks could use the young ones what are appropriate limits !!!! As usual, everyone has something to offer–if we just remember that we all have our strengths!

More thoughts from a Facebook Newbie

So I have been doing more reading and thinking about the new “social media”…especially relevant after my recent arrival on Facebook!. According to a NYT story on the Austin Festival South By SouthWest, folks attending the most successful part of the festival are not musicians…they are people dealing in the new media!!! Says the NYT, however, that the folks creating content seem too busy to have time to consume it! And in any case, I wonder…what does this content really mean? Do I really gain from knowing that my 21 year old nephew is “stoked” about an upcoming weekend of sports? (Which, in my old fashioned mind, might mean simply a weekend of watching too much television!) What about the old friend who thinks Florida is too pretty? What am I gaining here? What is the content?
It feels to me like I am entering a whole new culture. But the question for me is, does the connection pay off or does it simply mean a huge loss of privacy? What do the young people out there think? What does it mean to be truly connected?

Would you want to be a child again?

Or are you going to be content with being a child at heart?

Over the last few days I have talked to a few moms whose teen daughters are returning to school. Some of these young girls are starting high school.  While I have no children of my own, I can vividly remember what it was like to be that teenager.  As I look back with my new wisdom of age, I can now relate  to what my own mom had to put up with back then.  I was moody, irrational, unsecure.  Really, and mercifully, the only thing I had going for me is that I was a good student.  What energy it took to live (or muddle through)!  Youth is wasted on the young–I know that now that my body is transforming, the pieces not quite so effortlessly working together as they used to!!

When I look at these young girls and their mothers today, I think I would not go back to being child since that would entail having to go through adolescence again.  I will be happy being a child at heart…

I wish we could share wisdom with those young girls–but I am afraid that the best we can do is be present for them and remember that we have been through it ourselves, and that we managed to blossom into amazing women.  So, dear friends, take heart in the wisdom of our age…and know that one day, thanks to your magnificent efforts, your own daughters will be strong, self-confident women with a brilliant heart and future.

Feel the power…and find a cure!

Do you know someone in your life who has been touched by cancer? What if we put the power of all of us to work for the cure?  We have the chance.  Join me in supporting the campaign for  ”The Infinite Power of One” –and let’s prove that together, we are more powerful than cancer.
Twelve leading cancer centers are asking all Americans that can, to go online and donate $1.  I am asking you to consider doing so.  Simply log onto their sponsor, www.celebrations.com/cure to make your donation.  Then add your picture to their Healing Mosaic, which is a visual representation of the infinite power that one person and $1 can have on our health. Dance to your theme song

If someone asked you what is your theme song, would you know which one it is? Give it some thought.  Something from the time you were a child? An adoloscent? A young adult? What song tells something about you the way you feel right now or the way you would like to be? Is it whimsical? Serious? Loving? Sad? Happy?

If you have not thought about it before, take some time and get that IPOD out…and start listening to figure out what your theme song is right now!

Will  you come back here and share with us what is your theme song is? I’d love to know.

And so, to say it with Abba, “Thank you for the music…”.  Don’t forget the joy of dancing through life to the theme of your own tune!

How do you define success?

What is success for you? Is it lots of money? Fame? Recognition? Opportunity? Personal satistaction?  When is the last time that you have thought about your own definition of success and given yourself permission to evaluate your life goals in light of what is important to you? Why not take some time to do that now?

You may want to journal or you may want to talk about it with a life coach who will provide you with a safe environment to explore what the meaning of success is for you.  I love the saying that if you win the rat race, you are still a rat.  So, leave the rat race aside and concentrate fully on what it means to be…successfully you!

Climbing up the ladder of success

Want to achieve something important in your life? Focus on it with laser vision.

Visualize a ladder with your goal at the top:  you can reach the top by taking one step at the time.  But as you climb up, you must be aware of what is in your peripheral vision.  If market conditions, the economy or your life change, it may be time to take a step down the ladder or to stay put for a moment while you comprehend how the landscape around it has changed.  Then keep going up at a pace that is just right for you.  Need help getting there? Hire a good coach and don’t be afraid to have a partner in accountability that can help you keep you focussed on your goals!
